- An observational study of more than 1,000 patients at Yale University found that obstructive sleep apnea significantly increases the risk of stroke or death form any cause, and that the risk is linked to sleep apnea severity.
- The study of patients with acute stroke demonstrated that OSA persisted despite neurologic recovery, suggesting that the OSA syndrome may have predated the development of stroke. The study hypothesizes that patients with OSA have an increased risk of stroke or death from any cause that is independent of other cerebrovascular risk factors.
